56 apartments at 57 Manners Street

Another building will soon be joining the Te Kāinga family, and this time it could not get closer to the centre of the city.

57 Manners Street, which used to host The Setup and during COVID some transitional housing is being transformed into 56 new affordable apartments. It’ll be made up of 12 studios, 41 one-bedroom units, and three two-bedroom units.

Like all of our Te Kāinga properties the rents will be set below market and every apartment will come with whiteware, free WiFi, rubbish, and recycling.

Why this matters

Last term, I successfully extended the target number of Te Kāinga units to 1500 units by 2033. This new building is a direct result of our commitment to more Te Kāinga units.

Beyond providing housing for more than 50 people, 57 Manners Street will also bring more foot traffic back to Manners Street, adding some much needed life to a difficult part of the city.

The bigger picture

This development takes the Te Kāinga programme to 528 apartments delivered or under contact. Every apartment added to the programme is another step towards a city that’s more affordable to live in making Wellington a more vibrant and attractive place to live, work and play.

The benefits go well beyond the people who live in these apartments. Research by Sense Partners estimated annual benefits of around $5,792 per resident that gets spent in our inner city. On top of that, because Te Kāinga apartments are typically conversions of existing buildings rather than new-builds, the programme makes efficient use of infrastructure that we’ve already built.
